Casa Giumentina is a carefully restored stone house on the hillside above the village of Abbateggio, with views over Mount Maiella and the Adriatic.

I have been there four times. The first time, in November 2008, we played in the snow on the nearby Passo San Leonardo, 1200 metres above sea level. The second time, in June 2009, cherries were dripping from the trees. In September 2009 I brought some friends along – this time it was the fig season. and most recently, in July 2010, a group of us organised a relaxing ‘retreat’. I will be there again next week!

The owners, Ezio and Mariangela, got fed up with city life, and followed their dream – to create a B&B in this unspoilt, undiscovered corner of Italy. Not a detail has been overlooked: even the curtains are hand-crocheted by Mariangela.

They offer a personalized service, organizing activities, and accompanying guests to visit the surrounding area, from wineries to hermitages nestled on the hillsides.

The B&B has four ensuite bedrooms, and two kitchens, one upstairs and one down, where guests can self-cater if they wish.

If you like tranquillity, this is the place to go – Casa Giumentina is about two kilometres from the tiny village of Abbateggio, and three from the slightly larger town of San Valentino.

We stayed here for 2 nights, and wish it could have been longer. The hosts, Mariangela and Ezio, are exceptionally caring and hospitable, and go above and beyond any expectations a guest may have! The accommodation has been beautifully renovated- almost rebuilt, and is spacious and very comfortable. Our bed was extremely comfortable, and our ensuite bathroom quite large and modern. Everything was wonderfully clean, and to a high standard.
There was a large bowl of fruit in the kitchen just for us! There are 2 ground floor ensuite rooms which share this kitchen, (and 2 more rooms upstairs, plus another kitchen which we did not see) The kitchen had a modern washing machine for a small fee, which was so unusual in our European travels, and very useful!
Breakfast was very good, and included cake, toast, juices, yogurt, cereal, and fruit. We enjoyed breakfast outside one morning.
The views are exceptional, green meadows, and distant villages, with snow capped mountains in the distance. The area is very quiet and restful. There are walking or hiking opportunites. This is a must see area within the

Ezio very kindly met us on our arrival at the rail station in Pescara, and drove us the half hour journey (at very fast speed!) to the accommodation. Mariangela drove us to a more local station when we departed, still a 15 minute drive at comfortable speed. They gave us dinner and wine when the local restaurants were closed (out of season) and refused any payment for this. The second evening they drove us around to show us a local village (where they live in winter) and church, and to seek out an open restaurant for us. Amazing! .. what more could anyone want!! The price per night was also very reasonable. This was a memorable experience, and one of the best B&B’s we have ever stayed at, and we have stayed at many.
